Congratulations to Maria Sharapova on winning the U.S. Open, the second Grand Slam for the 19-year-old beauty. But I'm not here to talk about that -- the more important headline from
the match, of course, was "Bananagate." Cameras caught her father, Yuri, holding up a banana, and minutes later showed Sharapova eating one on the sidelines. Reporters wereintrigued by the spectacle, unable to refrain from asking the champion all kinds of dumb questions. I actually don't fault them for inquiring, since I found it hilarious (read: arousing) myself -- but come on, couldn't these guys come up with better things to ask? Like, does the banana have a more practical purpose, like preventing cramps? If so, would another fruit or vegetable be sufficient in its place? How does she like it -- does it need to be ripe or a certan brand? Or does Ms. Sharapova do it just to attract more male suitors, since I can't be the only one that thinks it's somewhat of a turn-on Maybe she's trying to score yet another advertisement (which would be fantastic)? Whatever the case, I really hope she doesn't stop eating the bananas, because I might stop watching her matches. Actually, as long as she still does the grunting, I probably won't...but please, Maria, don't let the media stop you from doing what you (and I) love!
