All of My Obsessions in One Place

My Life

Revenge of the Nerds??

Posted by doktakra on October 30, 2007 at 11:58 PM

My roommate watches Saved by the Bell every morning, and I'm not judging or anything...it's actually semi-entertaining at times. I'm only mentioning it here because it's got me thinking about some important things. Like, does Tiffani (Amber) Thiessen belong on my Ladies list, or is she too far past her prime? I'm leaning towards "yes" after examining a few pictures, but I'll let my readers decide...and by that, I mean I'll have to conduct some more, um, research.

Anyways, on to the more thought-provoking topic: the state of the TV nerd. A quick disclaimer: I don't watch any shows starring nerds, like The Big Bang Theory (which I've heard is awful), nor do I care for any boring plot lines on quasi-sci-fi shows (Heroes, I'm looking at you). With that out of the way, we can begin. Now, Screech defined the stereotypical geek, and in true form, wasn't too popular with the ladies (read: got no booty). Unfortunately, two of my current favorites (in relative terms) have been pushing the boundaries of nerd reality. On Grey's, Izzie is literally fighting George's wife for the guy. Um, George? Seriously? And over on Friday Night Lights, Tyra and Landry are now longer just friends, but have started dating and...wait for it....sleeping together. Come on! I'm sorry to say it, but he is one ugly dude. Just try to disagree with me on that. So what gives? Yes, there are marginally plausiple but unmistakably BS reasons in both case, and I won't bore or blame you if you haven't been watching. But honestly, since when does one of the hottest girls in school go for a dude who's nowhere near her level by any stretch of the imagination? Sticking with the opening SBTB theme, that would be like Kelly going out with Screech, or something. It's just wrong somehow, isn't it?

Am I annoyed because this would never happen in real life, or because it's never happened in my life? Not that I'm...nevermind. No matter what, I'm just not buying it. At least the Grey's writers were smart enough to point out the absurdity of their show through Alex's displeasure and coldness. It's a slippery slope when it comes to implausible storylines, so is it a coincidence that all of these shows are now slipping?

Two Comments:

1. I am Alex's roommate and yes I do watch Saved by the Bell in the morning. No defenses--it's a classic.

2. Screech briefly dated Kelly in the episode where he tutors her in science and she (very briefly) has a thing for him--I believe Screech ends the relationship when he realizes they are too different (he wanted to go to an insect rodeo and she declined, if I remember correctly).

--After making this comment I realize I probably do need to stop watching so much SBTB in the morning...(never will...)

Wow, I don't know where to begin. First of all, you know damn well that you remember it correctly, since you somehow know exact quotes from a show that's been off the air for 13 (!) years. I'm actually a little disappointed that I'm wrong about the crazy Screech/Kelly relationship, but only because it was a part of my argument on the implausibility of such matters. Though I would seriously need to reexamine my life choices had I been aware of those details ahead of time (a rodeo show? Okay, then...). At least I can now keep my eye out for the ep...yep, it's now come to that.

I understand your frustration with Heroes, but let’s get something clear. In season one most of the storyline revolved around stopping a nuclear explosion in NYC. There doesn't seem to be a focus yet on anything so far this season. Of course we have Peter's dilemma of trying to figure out who he is and what happened to him. The only other focus I can think of is HRG and Mohinder trying to bring down the Company.

If you rewatch the season opener, there wasn't a specific thing they were doing at the start, other than introducing us to new characters. That's exactly what they're doing in these first few episodes this season as well. Once the introductions are out of the way, the plot will really get into motion, and you'll get more of the same great show.

We're still meeting all of the new characters, while following an old plotline, so everything's still quite in order from the last season to now. Personally I think that limits what the writers can achieve. Generally yes, you want some semblance of a main plot, but who cares if it's scattered. IMO that makes for a better show.

I guess it's just my opinion but I think a "focus" or main plot makes for a better show. It's starting to come around now, but before that, everything was just kinda going on and I had no idea what direction the show was going. I think the show would be pretty boring without a central theme. I can't imagine watching Niki helping Micah doing homework, or watching Claire as a normal teenager doing just normal teenage stuff. Stopping the "bomb" in NYC was the climatic event of last season and it kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting more each time I finished each episode. This season it looks like it's going to be finding the killer, and Peter regaining his memory.

Anything involving the Bennett family in particular has been morphed into a horrible offshoot of "Dawson's Creek". I'm definitely at the point where if that guy doesn't secretly turn out to be horribly evil I'm just going to stop watching it weekly altogether and just skip through any scene any member of the suddenly annoying and predictable Bennett family appears in.

And really, Claire's car gets stolen and mysteriously ends up in the possession of Sylar and two new characters? Oh come on, that's just freaking ridiculous but of course the stolen car will become important later when they cross the border and it gets identified. I hope they just die though because they've already shown themselves to be worthless human beings in their selfishness to save themselves at the expense of literally the entire human race if it dares to get in their way. Those two are not Heroes, they're Villains.

A lot of the storyline does show promise though, hoping for some better writing next week and a lot less Claire the way things are going.

anonymous1: You wrote all that because of my quick comment about Heroes? I think you contradicted yourself a couple of times, but whatever. Look, I like the show...to an extent. I was referring to the Hiro/ancient Japan storyline though, FYI, not the Claire one. I'd never say anything bad about Hayden. Thanks for checking out the site! Feel free to leave your name next time....

anonymous2: I had to delete your comment due to the profanity -- my server has rules about that sort of thing, or else I would've left it. If you think I write "[stuff] that no one gives a [darn] about" then why are you checking it? Not that I want you to stop or anything...
